If anything, NewJeans have been on the ball in terms of promotion. Ever since December’s gorgeous Ditto, it seems as though we’ve gotten something new from the girls every other month. A tactic that thought could get quite exhausting, does bode very well for the groups overall relevance and popularity. New single Super Shy arrives as an early sampler of the groups upcoming comeback and while it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, provides a satisfying soundscape that’s easy to get lost in.
Like the groups past few efforts, my first listen of Super Shy didn’t do much. Its lightweight melody and production, while undeniably solid felt too slight, lacking the kind of knockout melodic turns or hooks to really sink your teeth into. However, each subsequent listen brought out more and more of the tracks many charms. I love how the production switches from airy to more skittery percussive elements with utter ease, speeding up parts of the track that really help with its overall dynamics. I just wish It didnt end so prematurely. At only two and a half minutes, Super Shy could really have done with an extra minute of content, one that could have expanded upon this already addictive landscape.
But bar that, Super Shy remains an incredibly fun listen, one that won’t set the light on fire but one that’ll act as a wonderful head nodder. Songs like this thrive on the vibe they manage to generate and with its incredibly sticky pre-chorus and hook, thats something Super Shy no doubt excels at. The performance mirrors the overall nature of the track, suitably low-key yet undoubtedly engaging. The “you dont even know my name do ya” remains an excellent highlight, one that’s grown more and more addictive with each listen and one that no doubt will give Super Shy some excellent growing potential.

I like this a lot. Ditto is still their best song, and I love how this song acts as a lighter successor to it.

it very much is ditto-lite (which isn’t a bad thing) but I still really yearn for hooks as good as Hype Boy or Attention
