Song Review: Odd Eye Circle – Air Force One

Almost 6 months on from the entire fiasco that was the LOONA legal situation, we have one of the first peeks at new music from one of the groups most renowned sub-units. The legendary Odd Eye Circle. A trio that gave rise to some of LOONA’s strongest and most assured work in both pre and post debut era’s. And as expected, big comeback single Air Force One sees the girls tackle the kind of upbeat yet stylish sound we expect and the results are rather satisfying.

I adore Odd Eye Circle’s Sweet Crazy Love. It’s one of those ethereal, heavily melodic pop songs that hit the perfect sweet spot between symphonic and pop dance. Air Force One takes a much more off-kilter and pop oriented soundscape compared to that previous triumph and while not all the elements come together as flawlessly, it no doubt gives us an interesting listen. I love the jersey shore beat accents that underline the verses. It remains one of my favourite percussion progressions and to see it appear more frequently is a fantastic sight for me personally. The production percolates between differing tempo’s and synth accents to give a listen that consistently feels like a ride. The vocal melodies follow suit, effectively playing off the ever changing production without ever feeling at odds.

The chorus follows suit, employing an incredibly catching “da da da” refrain that opens the hook strong. I’m not too sure about the more melodic segment that follows but it’s no doubt an incredibly catchy centrepiece. One that’s bound to get stuck in your head after a few listens. I love the vocal arrangement here, it’s layered but leaves enough room for the individual vocal colours to be present, once again playing into that disorientating production style that elevates the verses. I’m sure Air Force One will age well but for now, it remains a solid mix of both old and new. One that shines a bright light on any more future work we may see from the girls.
