Song Review: Agust D (BTS Suga) – Haguem

With Jungkook’s Seven harbouring almost instant success upon release both commercially and critically, it surprises me that I never ended up doing a writeup for neither Jimin or Suga’s releases from earlier this year. Well, that changes now because it feels a little wrong to have my two cents out for one of the members solos but not the others. Suga’s Haguem is the most hip hop oriented of the bunch, powering forward on a thrilling instrumentation but doesn’t quite reach the heights it initially sets out to.

I very much enjoyed the pompous display of badassery that was 2020’s Daechwita. It was a track that brought together Suga’s immense talent with an equally fiery production, one that zigged just as violently as it zaged, setting the stage for areal showy effort. Sure it was a little repetitive and overlong but boy did it have its merits. Haguem feels like a sonic sequel to that track, with all the necessary bravado but without the presence of a compelling hook. I can understand why some people like the chorus here but for me, it’s just too repetitive to really leave a mark. The wordplay is fun and the delivery is superb but I crave for something more to chew on here.

Which is exactly what I get in the tracks connecting tissue and production. In almost all departments bar its central hooks, Haguem is a blast, building towards an aggressive yet instantly notable hip-hop soundscape that works as the ideal playground for Suga’s rough tone. The performance and production work hand in hand to deliver something truly of note and distinctly Suga. I cant say it’s all for me but for admirers of this sound, Haguem is more than a slam dunk effort.
