2025 Countdown
Honourable Mentions // 100 – 91
90. Dove Cameron – Too Much
Crunchy electro pop from the former Disney channel star that recalled early Lady Gaga in all the right ways. I never really connected with much of Dove Cameron’s earlier work but Too Much was just too potent to ignore.
89. FKA twigs – Sticky
“EUSEXUA” was one of the year’s most inventive albums and I honestly could have picked a number of songs from it to feature here. From the claustrophobic title track to the campy energy of Childlike Things, there was just so much to chew on. But in the end I just had to go for the gorgeous atmospheric magic of Sticky. The track pulls you in from the start with its magnetic melody before delivering one the most euphoric releases of the year.
88. Close Your Eyes – X
Dynamic pop RnB delivered by one of the year’s biggest surprises, X works as a thrilling culmination to Close Your Eyes’ fantastic debut year. I love the sprawling hook and vocal performance on this one so much.
87. Ariana Grande – warm
True to its name, warm sounds like the aural equivalent of a comforting blanket on a cold night as you snuggle up next to someone you love. Fully at ease as that gorgeous chorus fully envelops you both in its tight, loving embrace.
86. G-Dragon – Take Me
While G-dragon’s long awaited comeback didn’t quite hit me like I had hoped, Take Me remained a constant on my playlists thanks to its nimble funk and incredibly sticky hook. Add to that a genuinely great guitar solo and you’ve got a real winner! (also helped that I got to experience it live whooo)
85. sombr – 12 to 12
Though accusations concerning the tiktokification of modern music from the masses lie firmly on the shoulders of artists like sombr, it doesn’t take away from the fact that these tracks can sometimes be real stunners. Such is the case with 12 to 12 which harnesses a killer guitar riff and great chorus to deliver an endlessly replay-able throwback.
84. Laufey – Sabotage
A tour-de-force listening experience that masquerades as the usual Laufey experience before pulling the rug under you in the most explosiv—and borderline jarring—of ways. This is one of those that you just gotta experience for yourself in a dark room, eyes closed, at full volume.
83. Sabrina Carpenter – Busy Woman
A bonafide pop star with another bonafide pop hit that mixed retro influences with a classic pop sheen that never gets old. I just wish there was a little more melodic or instrumental variation to send it over the edge but there’s honestly very little this busy woman can do wrong in my eyes at this point.
82. DE’WAYNE – Sundays
By FAR one of the most underrated artists working currently, DE’WAYNE delivered what might just be his best song yet with the Springsteen-esque tribute to his father, Sundays. The chorus on this one is just so so massive.
81. KiiiKiii – Dancing Alone
K-pop is as much a visual medium as it is an auditory one and while Dancing Alone stands as a very solid 80’s throwback with some killer synth accents, it’s actually the music video that gets it on the list. It’s one of my favourite mv’s in ages, perfectly capturing the magic and joy of youth with performances that feel genuine and an art direction the feels fresh and perfectly calibrated to the music. It’s the perfect vessel for the freewheeling nature of the lyrics and hook, elevating the listening experience to even greater heights. Definitely check this one out with the video.
