AB6IX snatched a place in my top 10 Kpop songs of 2019 with the effortlessly cool Blind For Love. Since then the group have gone through a number of issues including members injuries and leader Youngmin’s DUI, which eventually led to him leaving the group. This led The Answer and its accompanying album to be delayed from a scheduled 8th June release to now. And coming off the heels of Blind For Love, The Answer feels a little underwhelming.
While The Answer is fun and upbeat, I’m not sure if it’s the kind of sound I want from AB6IX. In an ideal world, the group would have stuck to the sophisticated deep house template of their first two efforts. It’s not a wholly original sound but it just fits them so well. In that regard, I would have much preferred the excellent Lee Daehwi produced Vivid to be the feature. The boy is a bonafide superstar and his own solo still remains one of my favourite tracks of the year. Not only does Vivid perfectly fit the summer but it also maintains the signature sound the group were forging during their first two comebacks. It’s a track that seems like a natural progression for the group. In contrast, the Zico produced The Answer feels more Zico than AB6IX.
To me the track, while solid feels much more like a strong b-side than a strong title track. It’s much more laid back and quirky than the groups other title tracks and I quite like that particular aspect of it. It’s instantly catchy, anchored by a bright addictive chorus at its core. There isn’t much I dislike about The Answer but there isn’t too much that I love about it either. It sits in that awkward middle ground. Is it upbeat summertime goodness? or too throwaway for its own good? The trap laced post-chorus hook is the biggest example of this, opting for a rather lethargic melodic delivery than a fully fleshed out refrain. There are moments when the track catches fire, like the standout pre-chorus and its more funky undertones but for me it just kind of falls short. The album on the other hand has more than a few stunners in its ranks.
Final Rating: 7.5 / 10
