Song Review: EXO – Hear Me Out

As one huge part of K-pop’s 3rd generation dynasty, EXO are yet another legacy group preparing a summer time comeback. And while much of that initial hype has been plastered with less than ideal corporate drama behind the scenes, the group have remained steadfast in their intentions to deliver their long awaited return. Hear Me Out comes as the second pre-release for the groups upcoming full length album and delivers the kind of groovy RnB the boys pull off so damn well.

Despite its overall potent nature, Hear Me Out opens with its weakest moment. A flimsy synth backing with a less than convincing Sehun led verse that feels rather throwaway in nature. It’s not terrible but gives an unpolished sense of execution that feels at odds with a group of such a stature. However, by the time the prechorus comes around, all of these sentiments are gone and we’re right back in good old EXO territory. The performance is crisp, the harmonies heavenly and the melody wonderfully catchy. It’s an excellent vibe, one that doesn’t quite knock it out of the park but doesn’t ever try to.

And sure while that vocal blend does much of the heavy lifting over an otherwise hum drum melody, it only makes me yearn for it to be attached to a stronger set of melodies. What we have here is fine, even better than fine for a pre-release but it just doesn’t carry the same amount of emotion or gravitas you would expect from a great EXO track. Hopefully that’s reserved for the main course though these appetisers more than suffice for the time being.
