Bar last years disappointing Can’t You See Me and its accompanying album, TXT have been one of the most consistent groups in recent memory (Puma doesn’t exist in my mind). I consider the trio of Crown, Run Away and Blue Hour to be a collection of modern classics, expertly nailing their intended genres with an additional blast of character from the boys unique vocal blend. As such, 0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You) comes with heavy expectation and its rock based teasers did little to diminish them. And while it does have its hiccups, I Know I Love You is another fantastic entry into TXT’s near flawless singles run.
Now if you know me, you know that I love tracks that opt for a harder edged rock sound. And while the boys have tackled rock before, I Know I Love You turns up the rock elements and the edge ten fold. This is full mid 2000’s angst and while that could have gone wrong very easily, TXT provide a fitting vocal performance that feels so raw and impactful. I adore the fact that HYBE finally decided to ease up on the vocal processing as the more natural delivery really gives I Know I Love You a more authentic and musically fulfilling listen. The chorus is the best example of this, exploding into a rousing cry that incorporates just the right amount of singing and shouting to create an instantly memorable centrepiece that captures the overall concept of the track flawlessly. Seori’s softer vocals act as the perfect contrast to TXT’s more abrasive delivery, resulting in a post chorus hook that is just as catchy and emotive as the central refrain without causing a sense of monotony.
But while the chorus is right up there with some of the groups best work, I Know I Love You’s verses are a little more hit and miss. Though the track opens on a high with a preview of its central refrain, the opening verse lulls much of the energy with a melody and production that feels sluggish. It feels much more attuned to modern trends than what I would expected from the boys but when the ascending drum filled pre-chorus comes into the fray, such qualms are all but forgotten. Though I understand the slower, moodier verses were likely incorporated to make the final product more emotional and cathartic.Which despite my personal preferences, I believe I Know I Love You achieved in spades. This is yet another win from the boys.
