SONG REVIEW: Mazy Night – King & Prince

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about a new Japanese release. But if there is one song that demands it, it’s King & Prince’ incredible Mazy Night. Ever since my dive into the world of Johnny’s Entertainment in March, I’ve been falling further and further down this particular rabbit hole. Not only is the music here so much more invigorating than what’s going on in Korea right now, but they aren’t afraid to buck popular trends for more classic sounding tracks. And that’s exactly what makes a song like Mazy Night so great.

For what my opinions worth, Mazy Night is high energy edgy dance pop done right. In many ways it’s similar to 1THE9’s great Bad Guy from earlier in the month but Mazy Night goes much bigger. It’s constantly building instrumental is easily one of the years most enjoyable and that opening slow burn verse is a great example of how to create build without sacrificing momentum. But almost as if a switch has been flipped, a sudden whirlwind of strings unveils a glorious build over an exhilarating dance beat. It’s an incredible transition that feels immensely satisfying both in the moment and long after you’ve finished listening.

But the real star of the show is that knockout chorus, which heightens the drama for an absolutely epic pop moment. This is the power of a strong melody and it really helps transcend the track onto a completely new level. The groups vocals are layered to give the centrepiece an almost otherworldly feel and the hard hitting electro breakdown that follows is just the icing on the cake. It’s the kind of throw down the gauntlet song I’ve been waiting for and I’m so happy that my wish has finally been fulfilled. Take notes Korea!
